Utero Vitae. I started doing the preliminary sketches for this in 2018. It’s a murky stream under an old tree at nearby Willington. Utero Vitae is Latin for ‘Womb of Life. It’s all those micro-organisms lurking in it. There is something primeval about it.
This time I have used a linen canvas measuring 3ft x 2ft. Hitherto I have been using marine plywood. The latter is heavy but is firm. It always shows some grain however carefully one fills and prepares it. Canvas like this gives a lovely tooth to take the paint off the brush but it bounces about as one works on it.
